Optimisation of technologies

Sewage Treatment and Reuse of Urban and Industrial Wastewater

  • Reduction in sludge production by the aerobic and anaerobic treatments by means of physical, chemical and biological processes. The objective is to experiment on the feasibility of different alternatives to reduce the production of excess sludge in an active sludge process, through physical (sonolysis or ultrasounds at a frequency of 25 KHz), chemical (O3) and biological (enzymatic) treatments (subsidised by the PROFIT Programme (Ministry of Education and Science) and by the Programme for the execution of Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation regarding Environmental Projects (General Secretariat for the Prevention of Pollution and Climate Change of the Ministry of the Environment) both within the framework of the National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation (2004-2007))..
  • Study on the processes to minimise the production of sludge, recover nutrients and optimise energy consumption in the treatment of wastewater (subsidised by the Directorate General for Environmental Quality and Evaluation, State Secretariat on Climate Change of the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Means under reference no. 281/PC08/3-04.3).
  • Study on advanced Technologies for the elimination of nutrients and xenobiotics in the treatment of wastewater (subsidised by the State Secretariat on Rural Means and Water of the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Means under reference no. 094/RN08/03.1).
  • Research project for carbon footprint evaluation and sustainability analysis in the wastewater treatment plant selection process (in collaboration of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology).
  • Application of advanced technologies for energy and process optimisation of the general treatment outline for a wastewater treatment plant (subsidised in the 2011 announcement for the award of aid by the National Programme for Public/Private cooperation, INNPACTO sub-programme of the Ministry of Science and Innovation under file No. IPT-2011-1078-310000 Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación).

Potabilization and Desalination (Water for Human consumption)

  • Application of ultrafiltration technology in the potabilization of water destined for supplies. Experimenting with real water in the DWTP of Granada (subsidised by the PROFIT Programme (Ministry of Education and Science) within the framework of the National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation (2004-2007)).
  • Study of Technologies for Energy and Process Optimisation in Plants for Water Desalination by means of Reverse Osmosis (subsidised by the State Secretariat on the Territory and Biodiversity of the Ministry of the Environment under reference no. 096/SGTB/2007/2.2 Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación).
  • Advanced tools and methodologies for optimisation of the design, operation and control of plants for seawater desalination by means of reverse osmosis (subsidised in the 2010 announcement for the award of aid by the National Programme for Public/Private cooperation, INNPACTO sub-programme of the Ministry of Science and Innovation under file No. IPT-310000-2010-10 Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación).
