The water production capacity of the SDP is 7,100,000 m3 a year that is used to supply drinking water to the city of Melilla. It is the main supply resource of the city, providing more than 60% of its total water needs.

It has an open inlet via an underwater intake, a pre-treatment system based on two-stage sand filtration and a cartridge filter system, before passing to the reverse osmosis systems with energy recovery by Pelton turbines.
