Since 2015 Cadagua has been carrying out the “Water Footprint” project, which consists of developing a methodology for calculating and reporting water consumption and associated discharges. The risks and opportunities related to water were also analysed. Knowing this way our Water Footprint.
The method used to calculate the water footprint is specific and has been developed on the basis of the principles of “The Water Footprint Assessment Manual” (WFM), of the “Global Water Tool” (GWT) and GRI-G4. These indexes consider factors such as the water stress of the country, the impact on water resources, the impact on the quality and accessibility to water. This way the impact on this resource can be quantified.
The Water Footprint consists of three indexes:
- Business Water Index (BWI), related to the consumption of water and the discharge carried out in activities developed by Cadagua.
- Water Treatment Index (WTI), related to the impact water treatment activities have on the resource (urban and industrial wastewater treatment plants, drinking water treatment plants and desalination plants).
- Water Access Index (WAI), related to water supply projects as part of the Social Action Programme.
In 2016 we published the first information about the Water Footprint with a scope of 100%. In the same year Ferrovial entered the category of Water of the CDP index for the first time, obtaining the classification of A-, which was a recognition of the strategies and performance of Ferrovial.
Cadagua makes a decisive contribution to ensuring that the water footprint of Ferrovial is a positive one, since both the wastewater treatment and drinking water treatment activities imply an improvement in the quality of water; that is why we are benchmark in efficient water use and management.
